NO SMILE
During an artist residency in collaboration with the DRAC (Regional Directorate of Cultural Affairs) in the Montagne Noire region, I had the privilege of meeting many children. This experience was particularly enriching, as I chose to adopt a different approach than usual. Instead of having them pose with an artificial smile, I decided to photograph them while asking them not to smile, thus revealing their true essence.
This experience was revealing in many ways. By asking the children not to smile for the camera, I was able to capture authentic expressions, sincere gazes, and raw emotions. Each of them had their own story to tell through their eyes and demeanor. Their faces reflected their personalities, dreams, and concerns, resulting in portraits of unexpected depth.
This experience reinforced my conviction that photography has the power to capture the very essence of human beings, beyond appearances and social conventions. It allows us to see the true nature of individuals, revealing their vulnerability, strength, and authenticity. It's a valuable lesson that I continue to apply in my artistic work.
